The church speaks for us all...

These past few weeks have been chock full of the big bad abortion debate and wherever conception really begins.
The church put its foot in it once again by saying that they speak for all Christians when they outlaw abortion and that would raise hell and all manner of objections were the dastardly act enshrined within its pages.
I am at pains to explain that the church does not speak for all Christians. Being one myself I do believe that it is a morally wrong act and should not be performed with reckless abandon by any woman who simply does not want a child, having said that though I do believe that if the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother the doctor should then be allowed to suggest the procedure, sign off on and perform said procedure. I also believe that these were the exact sentiments of the law makers when they wrote the article to legalise the act.
As the past week wore on I began to see another area where the mother of said child may want to or have to partake in ending the life of their unborn child; in the case where she was raped. I have duly noted however that the ever present and vocal church leaders seem to be quite skittish when the question turns to that of violations such as rape.
At this point I have to make clear that I believe that life begins at conception but also say that it would be an even greater travesty for a doctor who is aware of health risks to both mother and child to do and say nothing just to lose both because he/she is opposed to an abortion that will save one life.
Let me at this time play the devils advocate in saying that at this very moment even as abortion is illegal in this country women are aborting by their thousands with more than 300,000 deaths per year that is about 29 abortions for every 100 live births.
Some women would say that birth is their prerogative and whether illegal or the risks to their own well being they would still partake in the act and they would go just about anywhere to get the job done.
Unsafe abortions contribute a significant margin to the maternal deaths in this country at 30 percent. It is estimated that 2,000 women die annually from unsafe abortions.
The leaders have threatened to mobilise a vote against the draft constitution if the committee of experts refuses to define clearly when life begins.
