Hand of God... 2.0

The last time we heard of this rare occurrence was in 1986 at the world cup quarter-final match between the Argentines and the English. The match was poised to end in a 0-0 draw when Diego Maradona scored a last gasp goal- and broke England fans hearts- by punching the ball into the net, after the game the Argentine was staunchly unapologetic and insisted that the goal came courtesy of the 'hand of God'.
Once again, the 'hand of God' seems to be rising form the ashes in the form of Thierry Henry's goal on Wednesday night against Ireland in a match to earn a spot in next years eagerly anticipated World Cup in South Africa.
After the goal Henry is seen gesturing towards the heavens in what seemed to be gratitude to the divine.
This kind of cheating would be non existent if football went the way of Cricket, Tennis and Rugby in employing high tech methods in making judgment calls. It has been seen in past matches that the human eye fallible, video technology would help reduce these mistakes and make the game more accurate.
But since the UEFA president Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter oppose such changes - saying that it would slow the game down - football is forced to remain in the dark ages. Platini's suggestion is that that we should experiment with two extra linesman and two goal line assistants. Wouldn't this make for more error?
Platini told Britain's Sunday Telegraph: “Either you help them with additional pairs of eyes or with technology and I’m against technology. Once you start, who knows where you might stop. The 18-yard line, the offside trap? All I’m saying is let’s try my idea.”
The referee; once informed of the handball should also be allowed to then disalow it.
The implementation of Goal Line Technology would allow the referee to see more clearly whether or not a ball went in or not and in this case the circumstances surrounding the goal.
Football should be woken up from its century's slumber and be entered into the 21st Century!

  1. The lustre of soccer will be lost with the introduction of the electronic referee. Hand of god, hand of the devil, the ghost goal, Wales vs Scotland(12/10/77) which have added to the beauty of the game would be no more lost forever...pity. Sometimes the bad guy needs to win...remember the movie Chaos...
