What a Shame!

Health and life are two of the most important things for anyone and insuring one’s life and well being has become a matter of increased importance for many if not all Kenyans what with death knocking louder and more frequently at the doors of the relatively youthful, visiting us indiscriminately as always. Something seems to shift; we seem collectively jolted into consciousness whenever a person of any importance passes away or- more frequently now- when a bomb or grenade is thrown into our establishments disrupting our peace and waking us into protection mode, forcing us to take precautions. It is an integral part of human nature to want to protect and safeguard not only our own lives but the lives of those nearest and dearest to us and when disaster or loss occur these innate instincts are heightened, we gather information about how to stay safe and fend of attacks of any kind, we force ourselves to become or stay healthy, eager to cheat death. The scary thought and finality of de...

Highly Educated.

All parents through time in memorial have wanted all that is best for their kids, for their little ones to have a far better life than they did. Part of that dream is for their child to get a good education firstly with Nursery school then on through Primary school and finally (hopefully) the school experience will end with a High school education four long years of it! When this is done the plan –for some and the wish for most all mothers is that their child has found their niche, that thing that fulfils their lives or at least makes them happier and gives them a sense of purpose.   A higher education has become paramount in today’s fast changing world, everyone wants the certificates, diplomas, degrees, masters and –eventually – PHD’s that will either get their feet in the door at their dream job or in some cases get them that long awaited promotion. Everyone had to have it; there seemed no other way around the job market. For some reason or other it seemed -on Wednesday nig...

Then We Said Goodbye.

It was just another Sunday morning and I awoke for another round of my newest addiction: Twitter. I must admit that the little blue bird has managed to monopolize my time and almost ridden me into antisocial behaviour and so it was that Sunday when I logged on for the latest in what my followers were doing and (although I don’t often admit this) to see whether I had amassed any mew member to my own Twitter family. As the Tweets came at the speed of light and I began to read down the line I noticed in passing that a crash had occurred at Kibiku Forest in Ngong   and as more people began to relay the same news I took it more seriously... 10-20 people can’t be wrong! So I did what all news junkies would do I clicked and read. As the day got older I dragged myself begrudgingly from my lap top and onto the TV where I like many Kenyans watched in shock and sadness as the facts trickled in that the Internal Security Ministry was wiped clean in one fell swoop.   As I watched my hop...

A Filthy Nation.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness that is what was taught in Sunday school. It is hard wired into the human psyche to   keep our surroundings clean and whenever even the smallest living space gets even the smallest of messes arises most of us swoop in with broom and bleach bottles in hands with mops and   brushes and masks to make the once messy space glisten and shine once again. I am one of these people and I seem to be one in a dwindling number of the Kenyan populous who still cares about my surroundings enough not to turn every spare stretch of road or room into a dump site. I take my rubbish back home with me when I cannot find a dustbin to put it in. I recall how horrified I was the very first time I saw someone litter I was quite young and had just been taught about the environment and how we all must preserve it only to see that in practice things were not as clean cut as my primary school teacher had made them, nor was the clean up an easy task as I had read the books ...

The Enemy of My Enemy...

As the week came to a close an increasingly aging rivalry was in a sense reborn as the Sabatia MP Musalia Mudavadi made no secret of his plan to topple his old ally and party boss in next year’s elections when he called for unity amongst the other political candidates in what he views as a merger strong enough to cause the PM’s fall.   As time goes by it seems more and more like a united or umbrella alliance will be formed or at the very least a strong show of unity against a PM his opponents think should retire. Those seemingly in this ‘alliance’ include members of the G7 alliance Uhuru’s new party TNA and William Ruto’s United Republican Party and with Mudavadi aboard the G7 vehicle may just become G8. “Uhuru has sent me here to tell you that he supports Mudavadi,” said Assistant Minister Lewis Nguyai. “He is ready to work with him with a view of supporting one presidential candidate. We have started talks with UDF and URP (such as) the meeting we had in Nairobi last week w...

Run...Away!

Common sense dictates that when something explodes or the earth starts to move under ones feet, when nature or man unleashes their unparalleled fury upon human kind we run in the opposite direction to the approaching or in some cases loud signs of danger and forthcoming and premature ejection from this thing we call life. Our innate and primary instinct would push most every person to walk or run as far away from the noise dust and flying debris as possible, to do anything to attain the simple goal of staying alive. This is what any normal and sensible person would and should do in these rather extraordinary circumstances. Kenyans however seem to be an alien species to which the above is of no consequence and who is prone to rather non sensible and bone headed behaviour. Time and time again we as a people (not all of us- I hope) refuse to do the right thing instead, like you rookie reporters fresh out of university the whole country (one county at a time) troops en mass, eyes...
